This is the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s fishing report for July 1, 2009. If there is a body of water you would like included in this report, please call or e-mail us with information on possible sources for that lake or river.

Fishing Tip: Consider blade style when selecting a spinnerbait. Willow leaf blades provide more flash and less vibration; Colorado blades provide more thump and water displacement. When fishing clear water, a willow leaf is the best choice. When fishing murky water or at night, you need to help the fish locate the bait through vibration, so go with a Colorado blade.

Food plots, a lot has been written before about this and I’m sure a lot more will be written in the future. Mostly by the companies who wish to sell you their seeds to plant..

It is always a good idea to get a handle on this early, food plots can become very expensive and require a good bit of work as well. One thing to remember is that, a deer’s plate changes throughout the year.

During the early spring month’s herds tend to be in search of a high carbohydrate food source, visiting leftover corn fields and plots of wheat or rye as winter gives way to spring.

One idea here is to use an automatic feeder, broadcasting shelled corn in an area close to your desired hunting grounds. But as spring wears on the deer population’s appetite will quickly switch to a high protein diet. During this time of year clover becomes their favorite meal.

Later, as the summer months begin to heat up, herds will begin congregating  in and around soybean or alfalfa plots until fall approaches. At which time, their cravings turn to grains. During this phase of their feeding cycle, sorghum seed pods will often become the preferred meal.

Then as winter approaches in late fall, once again the herd will be in search of high-energy  carbohydrates to see them through the winter.

As you can see, few if any hunters have the resources or time for that mater, to provide a complete year round array of crops. Basically there two stress periods for feeding herds, late summer and winter. With this in mind, a combination of high protein sources and high carbohydrates will make up your best food plots.

LITTLE ROCK – Arkansas youth deer hunters will enjoy two extra days for their modern gun hunt and a relaxed antler restriction during the upcoming deer season. Commissioners from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission formally approved the regulation changes as part of the 2009-10 hunting season-setting process at its monthly meeting today.

Two additional days will be added to the youth modern gun deer hunt on Jan. 2-3 to go along with Nov. 7-8 youth hunt. The Jan. 2-3 days will be bucks only in zones 1, 1A, 2, 3, 4, 4A, 4B, 5, 5A, 5B, 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15. No hunters 65 years and older are allowed to harvest deer during the January youth hunt. The bag limit revision allows a youth to take any buck (no antler restrictions) during any season.  Youths must comply with the zone or WMA seasonal bag limit.

One major change revised several of the current deer zones. The changes modify the existing boundaries for deer zones 1, 2, 3, 14 and 15; dividing deer zone 6 into three zones and splitting deer zone 8 into two zones. The changes were introduced to address goals of the Strategic Deer Management Plant. The new zones will be 1A, 6A and 8A.

Because of the discovery of reproducing northern snakehead fish in the Piney Creek drainage in Monroe and Lee counties, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will conduct a large-scale eradication during the first two weeks of October.

Why is eradication necessary?

Because snakeheads

  • Are aggressive top predators that eat most fish species
  • Are strong competitors with other fish species
  • Can tolerate Arkansas water temperatures year-round
  • Can spawn up to five times a year
  • Can severely impact fisheries
  • Thrive in delta environments with sluggish water with vegetation, undercut banks and low oxygen.
  • Can survive out of water for up to three days in a moist environment
  • Can breathe air and move short distances on land, using their fins to create a snakelike motion

The AGFC must act now to attempt to eradicate this nuisance species. Infestation of the White River National Wildlife Refuge is highly likely – these aggressive fish could invade the lower Mississippi River.

This is the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s fishing report for June 24, 2009. If there is a body of water you would like included in this report, please call or e-mail us with information on possible sources for that lake or river.

Fishing Tip: With summer heat beating down during the day, many anglers choose to fish at night. Here’s a tip from PRADCO’s Lawrence Taylor to keep you fishing instead of fumbling around in the dark:

Simplicity is important when fishing after dark. Unless you already know what the bass are biting, bring three rods – one rigged with a large top-water lure like a Spook, one rigged with a dark, Colorado-bladed spinnerbait and one with a bottom-bouncing jig or Texas-rigged worm or craw. With these three rods, you can fish every water level without tripping over a bunch of tackle and rods.

Statewide Family and Community Fishing Report: Catfish are in Community fishing ponds statewide. Nightcrawlers fished just off the bottom on a slip cork or on bottom with a bell sinker are working well. Many of the ponds are full of bream as well. Crickets fished under a bobber will catch plenty of bream. For more stocking information, call the Hotline at 1-866-540-FISH (3474) toll-free.
